Why Project C?
The Colorado Carbon Fund provides high quality carbon offsets to consumers as a way to support new energy efficiency and renewable energy projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our state.
The Colorado Carbon Fund, a voluntary carbon offset program, was developed by the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) to advance the following objectives:
- Develop a funding source for community-based clean energy and climate mitigation projects in Colorado
- Support Colorado’s climate change mitigation objectives
- Provide high quality, credible offsets for individuals, businesses and government agencies interested in mitigating their carbon footprint
Why Carbon Offsets?
Carbon offsets are a part of a three step process for consumers to engage in a sustainable energy lifestyle.
- Measure your emissions from energy use and travel.
- Reduce your emissions through energy efficiency and renewable energy.
- Offset unavoidable emissions through the Colorado Carbon Fund.
Carbon Offsets help support projects like:
- Increasing energy efficiency in schools, buildings, or transportation
- Generating energy from renewable sources, like wind or solar
- Capturing methane from animal waste and using it to generate energy at farms
- Modifying a power plant or factory to use fuels that lower emissions
Why the Colorado Carbon Fund?
The Colorado Carbon Fund will only support new, verifiable, greenhouse gas reduction projects that are developed in Colorado. The GEO is partnering with The Climate Trust, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, to manage this program, so donations to the Colorado Carbon Fund are tax deductible.
Local Benefits
In developing this program, The GEO will partner with:
- Communities interested in supporting local clean energy and climate mitigation projects
- Individuals and organizations interested in offsetting their environmental impacts
- Developers of emissions-reducing projects needing financial or community support
